"My God!! Do nurses always get this much respect from the MDs? How horrible for your first job."

There is no always. When I get that call, if I don't feel I can order what I'm being asked for, I always try to get to the patient's room and suss out the situation for myself.

It's unfortunate that often when you get that call you have been on shift for between twenty and thirty hours. It's objectively awful to be woken up from a few short minutes of rest to address something -- nothing feels like a big enough deal when you're that tired. If I get frustrated, I remind myself that the nurse phoning me did not invent the institution of 30-hour call, which is the real problem.

If I have bile left over, I direct it at the stupid hospital administrations that don't have protocols in place such that a ten-year veteran of floor nursing can give a patient a tylenol without calling me.

Maybe I should have called my doctor for something more for nausea and maybe an IV infusion after my hysterectomy. I had the PCA which I was afraid to use because I was constantly throwing up and my BP was never over 95.
Being a nurse, I knew that wasn't a positive thing, but the nurses who were treating me always responded with.. "Well we don't have any orders for you to get any thing for that."
Go figure.

I'd say Dr. A's comment was pretty typical, and Dr. B's actions also pretty typical once an assertive patient manages to contact them. And I would say that the real lesson is to leave the phone where they can reach it. After all, she got the pain medicine, did't she, and went to sleep, and stopped bothering the nurse. And don't patients have the RIGHT to advocate for themselves if the nurse's advocacy is unsuccessful?

Just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your site. As for the "Are you human?" question-I'm just not sure anymore. I just recently graduated from a nursing program and preparing for the NCLEX. I think I've morphed into a "bionic" being.
