my first time dealing with an acutely delusional pt involved a lady whom I talked to for a few days, while she was on our floor. All of a sudden she told me she saw spiders and bugs on her room door. I didn't catch it at first because it's never happened to me before, so I even went as far as checking her night stand for bugs... I made such a fool out of myself, now that I think about it...but in the end, it's all a good experience :)

Sometimes a technique for dealing with dementia patients is validation of the scenarios which they have in their mind. It can have a calming effect due to being nonconfrontational, but it can be hard for the caregivers to keep up due to emotional trauma.
Söderlund, M., Norberg, A., & Hansebo, G. (2012). Implementation of the validation method: Nurses' descriptions of caring relationships with residents with dementia disease. Dementia (14713012), 11(5), 569-587. doi:10.1177/1471301211421225

Being able to bounce ideas off other nurses is one of the reasons why I like working on a unit...there's always someone to ask or double check.

I've also found that sometimes...there isn't anything to do. Like you said, maybe her delusions warranted Haldol, but...not really. And sometimes people just want to to do SOMETHING...when really you don't necessarily have an explanation for what's happening or a way to fix it. I understand how frustrating that must be for patients/families, but that's just how it is sometimes.
